Strange file sizes after splitting vmdk into 2GB chunks

Hi,

I decided to split one of my VMDKs into smaller 2GB files, but the resulting files are mostly 320KB in size.  Does anyone know why this is, and whether there is any way to persuade the virtual disk to occupy 2GB files?
