Cannot boot from iso's

I am running vmware server (official version, not the one in the canonical repository) on Ubuntu 7.04 amd64 Server Edition. I can connect to the server just fine, but when I create a virtual machine and set it to boot from an iso, it won't boot. I have tried a WinXPpro iso as well as an Ubuntu iso. I haven't had physical access to the box to try a real CD. With no iso specified, it tries to net boot. The Host machine is console only (no X) -- Could that have something to do with it? I've run VM's successfully locally on the PC I am connecting from, so I don't think its that.

No error messages are given, just the VMware POST screen, then a black box with a small gray unblinking cursor in the upper left corner.

I did manage to get it to boot once from a BartPE iso, but it only worked once. It won't do it any more. I have also tried recreating the VM and disabling acceleration.

Any Ideas?
