Buffer I/O error on device sdx (vmware Server, Linux guest, Windows XP host)

Since installing vmware Server 1.0.4 build 56528 on a Windows XP host, I keep getting SCSI errors in my Linux 2.6.17-10-386 guest:

dmesg output:

17183434.356000 sd 0:0:5:5: Device not ready: <6>: Current: sense key: Not Ready

17183434.356000     Additional sense: Logical unit does not respond to selection

17183434.356000 end_request: I/O error, dev sdy, sector 0

17183435.236000 .................................................................................................not responding...

17183533.232000 sdz : READ CAPACITY failed.

17183533.232000 sdz : status=1, message=00, host=0, driver=08

17183533.232000 sd: Current: sense key: Not Ready

17183533.232000     Additional sense: Logical unit does not respond to selection

17183533.236000 sdz: test WP failed, assume Write Enabled

17183533.236000 sdz: asking for cache data failed

17183533.236000 sdz: assuming drive cache: write through

17183533.236000 sdz: Spinning up disk.................................

There are only three vmware virtual hard disks (BusLogic adaptor) on SCSI 0:0, 0:1, 0:2 (sda, sdb, sdc).

So I wonder what all these errors with sd(d..z) mean.

Previous vmware Server 1.0.3 build 44356 did not show these errors. Kernel and modules have not been changed. Latest vmware tools installed without problems.
