Unable to release the cursor in vmware console

I am using vmware server console to access a virtual machine (ubuntu server) I have created on my home server.

I want to install vmware tools in the virtual machine but I am unable to select the menu vm/intall vmware tools...

Every time the I select the console with my mouse the vm grabs the cursor.

I have installed the server in windows xp and kubuntu and I have the same problem in both operating systems. I am running both using vmware fusion on max osx.

When I use the ctrl-alt to release the cursor fusion thinks I am trying to switch from full screen to windows mode.

I changed the shortcut key to ctrl-alt-shift but it still refused to work.

I can get the cursor back so that I can switch between the xp/kubuntu virtual machines to osx but when I hover the cursor over the console the cursor (which is a glove with a single finger) and try to select a menu item but the cursor goes back to the vm.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

I did do a search online and in the forums and only found one unanswered post with exactly the same issue. Unfortunately no one answered the posted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have spent a few hours trying various menu settings with zero success.

Thanks

Mercurio
