pros and cons of windows vs linux for new development environment

Ok guys this is another vmware server question in regards to running a linux host or windows host. I'm a windows admin right now I run a test enviroment on vmware server on windows server 2003. I will say up front I'm new to linux I mainly became interested in linux last year when I started running ESX 3.0 servers in production. I'm going to deploy a development environment for our programmers using vmware server on a Dell poweredge 2950 if I go with a linux install it will most likely be Oracle Enterprise Linux since I can get support cheap as you all know Oracle linux is Centos. Now for you guys that run Vmware server on Linux what are the highpoints of using Linux what am I gaining from using Linux.  The one benefit I see off top is that I will only need to deploy windows patches to the guest OS I always hated having to patch the Windows host than the guest. Of course I know that if I use Windows I will need to purchase a license I'm not concerned about paying for a windows license we get great prices through Dell so its a small fee. I also here Linux guys say that a no gui Linux version takes up less memory than server 2003. On the other hand I've never seen any stat showing how much memory a gui on server 2003 actually takes up. Now on to my last  area of concern  vmbackups I read some where that one can use rsyc and lvm to take snapshots of running vm's without having to take them can someone here tell me if this is true?
