VMware *virtual* network card disconnects on bootup

Good day everyone,

Hardware\Software Build:

- VMWare Server 1.0.6 Build 91891

- Host Machine: Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2

- Guest Machine: Windows SBS 2003 SP2

- Problem occurs every reboot

- Host connects to Internet through ADSL Modem/Router

- Guest uses Bridged networking

We have a problem with our Guest machine and network connectivity upon bootup, described below:

Upon rebooting the Guest Server, a basic network ping test is conducted from within the VMware host server to the Guest SBS Server, however just before the  Guest SBS server presents the windows logon screen, the network connection is dropped and the ping tests times out.

I manually rebooted the SBS server as well as the entire VMware host server, however the issue is consistent regardless of power cycle routine.

This issue is consistent with the problems we’ve been experiencing over the last couple of days with your server being unavailable, which at this time I suggest is a result of the Microsoft updates being applied, which then automatically re-boots the server at 03:00

When undertaking a VMware manual network disconnect (which is basically a virtual network cable disconnection) from within the VMware server host appliance and re-connecting, the SBS server is re-joined to the network and is 100% stable and consistent with the network connection.  I undertook a significant level of testing today, and users confirmed the server shares, Internet, printing and IPPBX were all operational.

I’ve not seen VMware behave like this previously, and this issue is not present on our production VMware server (albeit differing hardware), or other VMware servers.  I removed the  VMware server application from the Dell T300 server, and installed the latest version (V1.06.0) from VMware.com (with an identical configuration), however the issue outlined above still remains.

Any thoughts are highly appreciated.

Thank you

Chester.
