Hello,
We have 2 Virtual machines running VMWare Server 1.04, these run as W2K3 guests, the physical host that they reside on has run out of local disk space, so, I have copied one of the VM's off to another server so that we could try shrinking the VM's.
On one of the VM's this is what happened, it didn't happen on the other VM when we did the same steps
1. The .vmdk file is set to have a maximum size of 65gb,current size of the .vmdk was approx. 35gb, the guest has 2 NTFS partitions (C: & D:) that are approx. 35gb in used space.
2. From within the W2K3 guest, we deleted any redundant log files etc, and then defrag'd both the partitions.
3. I then ran sdelete -c c:, followed by sdelete -c d:, followed by sdelete -z c: and then finally sdelete -z d:
4. Once the VM had been closed I noticed that the size was of the .vmdk file was now 57gb!!!!, even though from within the w2k3 guest the used space within partition are the same size(s) as before. #1.
5. I have also run vmware-vdiskmanager -d and also vmware-vdiskmanager -p , followed by vmware-vdiskmanager -k to shrink the file but to no joy.
Does anyone now why the file size of the vmdk has increased, and more importantly how I can get it back to 35gb size in order for me to copy it back to it's proper host.
Many thanks
Jon
