Windows Vista Freezes with VMware Server 1.0.5

Hi!

Haven't been able to locate similar problem anywhere.

I'm running VMware Server 1.0.5 on Lenovo ThinkPad R61i with Dual-core pentium Mobile and 2G of physical memory. Host is Windows Vista Business 32 bit and as a guest I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition. I've allocated 1G of memory and marked it as dual processor server, the network is NAT.

The problem is that when ever I start the guest system, the whole host Vista freezes for about 10 minutes. I mean nothing happens. I can move the mouse, but even the system clock stays at the start time for some 10 minutes. After this the system starts gradually answering calls and opening other programs. VMWare starts restoring the saved session ( If I have the guest system on pause ). The restoration takes some 2-4 minutes and the system works fine after that. It did some flickering after that but I got that sorted out and now the guest works like a normal Win2003 server with 1G of memory.

The logs say nothing, only that it started. I've tried to up the priority of the VMWare services on task manager - doesn't help. I've tried to change the guest's settings - doesn't help. It might have something to do with the security software and/or the firewall. I'm using Norton internet security. I've opened the firewall for VMware but I'm thinking the virus protection might block the VMWare server to access registry or something. Does it do something like that at startup? Couldn't know.

Please help me with this. My boss is on my case to get this working, he's looking at me right now. Tell me if you have had same kind of problems.

Thx in advance

Meich
