Hi everyone,
My setup is nearly perfect for our
purposes but i was wondering if the forum had any tips on how to
improve performance. We consolidated our servers onto one main server:
quadcore 1.86ghz x 2, 12gb ram, 2x36gb raid 1 (os) , 4x74gb raid 5 (data) , 2x36gb raid 1 (vms), gibE x 2 (broadcom)
the host os is win2k3 x64 and it hosts the vms, acts as a domain controller and is also our database server (MS SQL, Advantage)
is using 1 of the gibE nics to connect to the network
vm#1
xp
prof - serves as a workstation and hosts some linking software to link
our MS SQL database to our Advantage databases (can't be hosted on a
server) as well as hosting our symantec server (due to no x64 instance
of symatec server)
is connected to gibE nic#2 through bridging
vm#2
win2k3 x64 - acts as the terminal server
is connected to gibE nic #2 through bridging
The
only issue I notice now is that occassionally clients connected to the
terminal server will experience some freezing, and more rarely a
disconnect. Additionally, occassionally the xp computer will lose its
connection to the server.
everything is on a gigabit network and clients connect either within the network or as roaming users through terminal services
I was wondering how I can improve my network performance to improve the network reliability.
Some thoughts I had:
1.
is it possible for the xp professional vm to be connected through a
virtual network only to the server but still obtain an IP address from
the main network (so it could still serve as the symantec server)?
would this reduce the network load on the second gibE nic?
2. when I directly bridge a vm to a nic, does it have access to the full bandwidth of the nic?
3. would getting a separate nic for the 3rd vm improve my performance?
i am open to any suggestions, and i apologize if my explanation is not clear enough.
i've attached a rough network diagram (though probably not done correctly)
