No usable clock interface found

HOST RHEL 5 x86_64 running VMware-server-1.0.10-203137.i386.rpm

vmware server 1 vmware kernel modules seem to be breaking /dev/rtc device

# hwclock --debug

hwclock: Open of /dev/rtc failed, errno=16: Device or resource busy.
No usable clock interface found.
Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method.

seems similar to (some OVER 3 years old !)

apparent workaround

shutdown all vms

shutdown vmware

adjust/fix your host date/hwclock

restart vmware

restart all vms
