could not install VMWare tools from the VM menu to Fedora Linux. It does not work and it does not give any errors. The VM menu will show Cancel "VMWare tools install...". The instructions for installing the VMWare tools are not very helpful. There are no new icons ceated on the desktop and no new files created in /tmp. Any ideas?

Trying to fix my Network connection....
Hello all,
I made some changes to my network configuration and lost connectivity between my VMs and the outside world. I have just upgraded the host PC from Fedora 7 to F8 and thought now would be a good time to start with a fresh install of VMServer and try again.
No joy...
My (rather strange - but only temporary) network configuration is as follows:
The host machine has a fixed IP of 192.168.124.101. This connects via a crossover cable to a PC on my main network which has a fixed IP of 192.168.123.101. This connects wirelessly to a router on 192.168.123.254 and thence to the outside world.
The host machine itself has no connectivity problems and in fact is my main machine for email, web etc...
When installing VMWare Server the vmware-config utility said that the network was "already bridged".
None of my VMs can access the Internet, though they can ping the host (192.168.124.101), the gateway pc (192.168.123.101), the router (19.168.123.254) and indeed any PC on the 192.168.123.0/24 network. Pinging a known external address e.g. 212.58.224.85 (www.bbc.co.uk) fails.
What am I doing wrong and can I fix it?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Mark.

How to fix Host networking failed after VMWare Server install?
Vmware Server 1.04 on CentOS kernel 2.6.18-53.1.4.el5 x64
When performing a RPM install, I didn't have xinetd installed.
I ran vmware-config.pl, and was .. indecisive .. selecting the networking options.
I went and found xinetd and installed it, and then reran vmware-config.pl
Everything looked ok, but then I rebooted the system, and the entire networking subsystem
stops working. (can't ping in or out, httpd and cups fail, can't log into xwindows)
I've managed to get VMware-server uninstalled and made it to init 3, but networking still isn't working. I don't know exactly what VMWare does to the OS for bridging/NAT/etc, so I don't know where to look to undo it.
/etc/vmware is still there, but /etc/vmware/netmap.conf is empty, and there are no vmnet devices installed in /etc/vmware
ifconfig shows lo and eth0 looking normal
What i want is to restore the networking to prior to the VMware server install. HELP!
Rick

low CPU utilization on host, and high on guest
Hi,
I have a problem with a guest machine (win2003x64 R2 as Exchange 2007server)
the Host is Xeon with 2 cores and Debian as OS.
sometimes the guest machine has a CPU utilization of 100% but at the same time i see about 2 or 3% cpu utilization on host. (onlysome times)
i tried having one core or two cores on guest, but when the problem happens host has low utilization and at the same time guest has 100%.
for your information: on same host we have another geust which is Win2003 (32bit) R2 which has no problem and always when the guest has a high utilization
the guest cpus have also high utilization.
any idea where the problem is?
regards,
mt
Installing Suse Linux Enterprise Server as guest
I try to install SLES 9 SP4 under VMWare Server 1.0.4 with Windows XP as host. When I start this virtual machine after the welcome screen of SLES I choose the Installation option and the installation begins. After the selection of my language and keyboard settings I choose the 'Start Installation or System' and then 'Start Installation or Update'. After that I choose 'CD-ROM' as my source. Now the following message appears: 'Cannot find the image.' and the installation fails.
In my VMWare hardware-settings for this virtual machine I have for my CD-ROM settings 'Use ISO image' and a correct path to this iso-file (on my system it is C:\SoftwareLib\Linux\SLES-9-SP4-CD-i386-GM-CD1.iso).
I cant find anywhere the solution for this problem. Can anybody help me to solve this problem?
Thank you very much

NIC drivers after conversion
hi there,
I successfully converted my physical machine to a virtual one, and booted it succesfully witihin wmware server. The only problem i seem to have is the NIC. The physical machine used to have a teamed interface "bond0" containing 2 physical 10/100 3com nics, eth0 and eth1.
After booting the virtual image, it only displays the bond0 interface when running ifconfig. I have configured one nic in my VM config. So i expected it to appear within my ifconfig listing, but it doesn't.
Does this mean i have to run vmware tools, or does it mean the conversion process (ran by Acronis Echo version) did not successully converted the physical nics to virtual ones?
Any help is appreciated,
Dion
Boot Guest OS using Host DVD driver
Hello all, I´m new on the vmware Infraestruture and I have some question about it with cdrom from host and guest OS:
1 - I´m using a 2950 Dell Server and I can not boot the guest DVD / CD-ROM from the physical unit. I´m using the physical unit from the host with Windows Server 2003 R2 media, I mount this media inside /mnt/cdrom using the command mount /mnt/cdrom and I can use the 'ls' command to list the files. But when I create the virtual machine, there´s only option to uses the /dev/scd0~7 and /dev/hda. Why is used theses paths and not the /mnt/cdrom? Any Idea ? ( I tried to create a symbolic link from /dev/cdrom to /dev/scd0- no success!!! ok, I´m learning ). I can install the windows if i use the local media option, but this is not the problem.
2 - Is there a way to configure to appear /dev/cdrom instead /dev/scd0~7 family and /dev/hda?
Thanks in advance!!!!
ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded
Hi there,
Just installed vmware server on my ubuntu box. Everything was going well up to the point of creating a virtual pc. I'm having a heck of a time trying to setup Windows 2k3. Constantly getting \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. Error code 7.
I've tried resetting the bios, removing any instance of acpi being enabled but still no luck. I've googled up this issue but can't seem to find a resolution.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Can't "grab input" or get focus back to guest

VMware Server Console 1.0.4 build-56528
Hi,
I've been running fine for a while, great system, but about an hour ago I lost (gave up) mouse/keyboard focus in the VM guest, and I can't get it back. The guest is still running, I sent the ctrl-alt-del and the windows task manager comes up and it updates cpu usage etc. I can see the mouse that was in the guest, still where it was located when I last left the guest, to work in the host. I've tried resetting all the preference->input options (turning off and back on), the "VM->Grab Input" menu item is greyed out, and Ctrl-G does nothing that I can see. Unfortunately I have unsaved work in the guest, so it would be nice to recover without rebooting the guest. I'm new to VMware - only about 2 months of use now, and try to avoid windows when possible, so could be doing something wrong in either.
Thanks

I installed VMserver 2.0 and it never promted me for a username and password. Now when I try to go in through the Web Access, it prompts me for one. I've tried every combination I can think of. Can anyone help me?
Problem Guest Performance.....
Excuse, my English poor... but I need help.
I am using VMwareserver 1.0.5. I have 3 guest installed. Two windows 2k3 enterprise and a red hat enterprise 4, all guests of 32bits.
The host is windows 2k3 enterprise 64bits.
My host is a HP DL585 with 4 proc Opteron 2ghz, 20gb of memory ram, and 1T of the hard disk SAS.
If I try to access these with the console of the vmware is very very slow. If I just leave 1 guest working it is perfect, if they are 2 or 3, it is very bad. All guest are with installed VMwaretools.
In BIOS of the host, I activated the virtualização option, to improve the performance.
Does anybody know him/it what can do??? That is normal???
The access through terminal service to the guest w2k3 is normal, in the opensuse I have a software web that this normal one. The problem is when I need to do an access for the console.

How to assign Physical Network Card to Virtual Machine
Hi Everyone,
I just want to ask on how can I assign physical network card in my virtual machine? My objective is to assign a public IP address to my Virtual machine and directly connect it to my router switch port.

VMware Server on Intel Atom
Anyone know yet how well VMware Server will run on the new Intel Atom architecture (in particular for me, the Atom 230). I plan to try it myself once I get a system setup but obviously can't do anything until then!
Thanks!
can't bridge to wlan0
Hi
I have an anoying problem where I can't bridge to a wireless (wlan0) interface. I've tried using two different
versions of vmware server on two different boxes....same story.
My setup:
Fedora 8 x64 on AMD with RaLink RT2500 (using kernel module or compiled driver)
Fedora 8 x64 Intel Core 2 duo with PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (standard built in kernel module)
The wirless works fine on both systems. I can bridge my vmware to the "copper" nics (eth0) and everything
is fine......but for the life of me I am unable to bridge to the wireless interface (wlan0) on either system.
When bridged to the wireless (wlan0) interface, from the guest I can ping the "base" and from the base I can ping and ssh into
the guest .....but from the guest I can't ping my default router(adsl)......the "base" can ping the router and access the internet fine.
I have no firewall no iptables and do not use selinux.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Cannot Ping Cluster IP of Network Load Balanced VMs from outside of physical host server.
I have a Dell PE2850 with one of its two NICs enabled and assigned with a fixed IP.
On this host I'm running VMware Server 1.0.6
I'm then running two guest machines which are Windows 2003 Advanced RC with SP2
Each guest machine has two virtual NICs. One is bridged and has a fixed IP assigned with gateway, dns and wins details. The second is a Host Only set to DCHP.
Each guest machine is added onto the same domain as my host and the fixed IPs they have been assigned are on the same subnet.
Following the section on 'using network load balancing with VMware' in http://www.vmware.com/pdf/server_admin_manual.pdf I have created my cluster assigning a cluster IP and name, adding each of the guest machines as a host and adding the cluster IP as an additional IP on the bridged NIC for each.
I'm able to open Networking Load Balancing Manager on either of the guest machines and connect to my cluster and see both hosts (guest machines) as connected and converged.
I'm able to ping the cluster by name from either of the guest machines.
From the physical host server I'm not able to ping the cluster by name (which is not unexpected) but I can ping the cluster IP successfully.
However, my problem is that I cannot ping the cluster IP from any other physical machine on my domain, even if they are on the same subnet. Can anyone recommend why this may not be working.
