my converted vmdk disk are slow ?

$

hello, i use vmware server 1.06 on a hp DL380 G5 quad core with RaID 1+0 SAS drives and 10gb RAM. the host OS is Centos 5.2 with PAE kernel.

I imported 4 virtual machines (2 win2Ksrv and 2 linux centos)

the 2 linux were moved using reinstallation/copy and the performance is ok.

The 2 windows machines were converted using vmware converter, and the real old machines were using scsi raid 1 drives.

the conversion were dificult, i had a blue screen at reboot and had to repair windows using the install CD.

now the machine works but disk performance is very bad when i copy large file (100mb).

i did a test with a openoffice installer.exe (100mb),when i duplicate it on the converted drive it takes more than 20 seconds to copy itself.

i created for test another scsi virtual drive, mounted and formated in ntfs in my converted VM  and the duplication is less than 2 seconds when i use this virtual drive.

my converted machines are preallocated one and semms to use virtual scsi buslogic drivers.

i moved the problematic VM on my mac using vmware fusion. and the problem is the same (slow copy on converted image but fast on a new created image)

what can i do ? i cannot defragment these vm since they are preallocated ?

any ideas ?

i can copy all my content to a newly created vmdk but i'll probably have to redo all rights and shares...

Any Way to Get More Than 10 Network Adapters Usable by VMWare Server Host?

$

I would like to use 15 virtual machines with a VMWare Server host, and I want each of those to have its own dedicated virtual network adapter.   The goal is to have each server live on a dedicated subnet.

The VMWare Server "Manage Networks" utility - which is very buggy and not very well implemented - seems to limit you to adapters VMNet0 through VMNet9.   Is there anyway to get more virtual adapters visible to the application so that you can then assign them to individual VMs within the VMWare Server console?

Service Won't Start v1.0.7 Event IDs 7001 & 7024?

Hi,

I've just installed VMServer 1.0.7 on a Dell Latitude D530 with 2GB RAM, and 2.2Ghz Duo Core running Windows XP SP3. This is a pretty standard laptop build/spec for us, and we've run VMServer on many others with this build. However on this particular one I can connect to the local host. Up on further investigation I found the services weren't starting. The Event log shows the 2 following event error ids:

Event Type:       Error

Event Source:    Service Control Manager

Event Category: None

Event ID:           7001

Date:                30/09/2008

Time:                17:53:44

User:                N/A

Computer:         LAPTOP25XP

Description:

The VMware Host Agent service depends on the VMware Authorization Service service which failed to start because of the following error:

The service has returned a service-specific error code.

Event Type:       Error

Event Source:    Service Control Manager

Event Category: None

Event ID:           7024

Date:                30/09/2008

Time:                17:53:44

User:                N/A

Computer:         LAPTOP25XP

Description:

The VMware Authorization Service service terminated with service-specific error 6000009 (0x5B8D89).

I'm assuming the first event id - VMware Host Agent service - is failing simply because of the second event id - the VMWare Authorization Service - is failing to start. However I have googled and searched, but can't find anything on error code 6000009. Can anyone suggest a solution to this issue?

Many thanks

VMware Tools on Endian Firewall

Recently set up an Endian VM and have it acting as my firewall/router for my home network.  I'm curious if anyone has ever tried to get VMware Tools installed on it?  It appears to be some flavor of Red Hat (uses RPMs).  I'm going to try to find some kernel headers, then finding gcc, make, etc. shouldn't be too difficult.

Or has this been tried and is not possible?

Thanks

Hi.

Have anybody know of the patch to vmware server 1.0.9 to have it successfuly compiled on kernel 2.6.29. I have just recently upgraded from kernel 2.6.27 and vmware server modules stop compiling.

VMware Server and VirtualBox 3.x

$

I currently use several VMs based on VMware Server 1.x on a Windows XP box. I am happy with my current environment and I do want to go on using it.

I need to perform some tests using VirtualBox 3.x but I don't want to compromise my current VMware Server 1.x environment.

Can anybody tell me if I can install and run VirtualBox 3.x on the same Windows XP host without compromising my VMware Server 1.x features?

If so, have I to consider any specific issue?

Can't open .vmdk or 1 of the snapshots it depends on. Reason: file specified is not a virtual disk

I have recently posted another thread for a separate issue on VMware-server-1.0.6-91891 running on CentOS 5.3, this issue is different but stems from the same day.

I posted there that I had downgraded from 2.0.2 to 1.0.6 and found that unless I edited both the .vmx and .vmdk file that I couldn't get the 2.0 VM's to open in 1.0.6. Out of the 4 VM's I have, 2 are up via this method, 2 more are causing problems.

This particular discussion pertains to another Windows 2003 Server VM, 70Gb in size, that unfortunately was created as monolithicSparse. I did manage to edit the vmdk file with a hex editor, and now I'm seeing 'Continum's reference to the sanbarrow.com site state that doing this a NO-NO. /sigh.

Here is where I'm at:

I can load the VM into the inventory, but when I go to start the VM:

Can't open the disk "../path/to/VM/Win2k3.vmdk" or 1 or more of the snapshots it depends on. Reason: File specified is not a virtual disk

I tried moving the .vmdk file to another folder and opening it to no avail. I tried re-opening the file in nano, let it sit overnight, but it never did open.

Attached is the current date's vmware.log

I tried making a clone of this file with vmware-vdiskmanager, which also failed:

/usr/bin/vmware-vdiskmanager -r "/var/lib/vmware/Virtual\ Machines/Windows\ 2003\ Server/Windows\ 2003\ Server.vmdk" -t 1 "Windows2003Srv.vmdk"

Using log file /tmp/vmware-root/vdiskmanager.log

Failed to open the disk '/var/lib/vmware/Virtual\ Machines/Windows\ 2003\ Server/Windows\ 2003\ Server.vmdk' : The system cannot find the file specified (25).

Unable to ping/ssh to Guest VM in NAT mode

$

I have used VMware-Server in the past on RHEL/Fedora host where the VM's were also RHEL/Fedora.

I used NAT mode and was able to ssh between the VM's and host pretty easily

Thinking on similar lines, I installed VMware-Server on Ubuntu host(running lucid lynx) and the guest image is Maverick(10.10), but I am not able to ssh/ping the guest machine from my host, in NAT mode. I can't use any other mode because of network issues

Though reverse is working perfect, ie from Guest to Host

There are no blocking firewalls on any of the machines

Vmware server 1,2 and vmware player 3 silently crash

$

I recently encountered a problem with my Windows server 2003 system (32 bit with PAE, 8GB ram). Vmware server 1. Vmware Server 2, And vmware player 3 failed to launch, the service would silently crash or fail to load when starting from the services tool. No errors would be recorded.

I decided to uninstall it, and reinstall. Thing is, the installer loads up, then crashes within seconds. I tried running this from the command line where it should prompt you with a window about the proper commands, with an OK button at the bottom. This flashes up and closes out automatically.

I then moved onto formatting this system and reinstall windows server 2003. After applying all of the updates, no vmware products seem to install. The installer starts to load, then crashes after about 2-3 seconds to the desktop. No errors, no prompts, nothing is recorded in the event log.

Im a bit stumped at this, is there any proper troubleshooting steps to resolve this or at least figure out what could be the cause?

Issue with RHEL 6.1 on VMware

Hi,

I am trying to create a RHEL 6.1 guest on VMware.

I am using following VMware version.

-bash-3.2$ rpm -q VMware-server
VMware-server-1.0.10-203137

The problem I see is that as soon as the VM starts to boot, it receives a fault 13 and again starts rebooting. This process goes in loop.

  Any idea, whats happening here?

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1020181. suggest that there is some access issue. But same setup works fine for RHEL 5.6.

  Following is the log:

Virtualizing Small Business Server

$

I am going to be setting up a new Dell server with Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium.  It is a very small office - less than 10 people.  While I have experience with the ESX and Workstation products, I have no experience with VMware Server (or its predecessors).  I also have no experience with trying to virtualize SBS2003.  With SBS2003, we'll be using all of the core components: file / print services, Exchange, SQL, and ISA 2004.

The h'ware is sufficient (SATA RAID 1 array, Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM), but likely not compatible with Linux, so the current plan is to run VMware Server on top of another Windows Server 2003 license (sigh).  Although it is the only "planned" server to be run on the server hardware, I am considering using VMware Server for two primary reasons: hardware independence and the ability to add add'l servers should the need arise in the future.

I am interested in any experience or advice anyone has on this plan.  Any performance concerns?  Any reliability concerns?  Is running ISA Server on a VM going to work?  Any other concerns?  Thanks.
